My goal is to incorporate Thoughtful Home features into each new home design. The ability for new homes to positively impact life longevity and human peak performance is real, so I want to infuse every plan with as much potential as possible. Even the smallest plans can include features that make them easier to live in and more relaxing and rejuvenating. These have been the three key tenets of my Thoughtful Home concept since the very beginning in 2009.

As part of our ongoing work in the Innovation Lab at BSB Design, we are poised to launch a second iteration of some incredible multifamily building and unit designs. The Thoughtful Home informs every new apartment unit plan I create, and I’m excited to write about them here.

STARTING SMALL – OR ARE WE?

The homebuilding industry has historically been slow to adopt change. But that doesn’t mean developers don’t want to innovate. By taking some initial steps to include Thoughtful Home concepts in apartment unit design, I can demonstrate that the cost-benefit ratio is well worth the investment. While these concepts might seem like minor adjustments to some fairly standard unit plans, research has proven that the payout in lifestyle, functionality and well-being is actually astounding.

Three key Thoughtful Home spaces are reflected in my new apartment unit designs:

1. Transition zone (above)
2. Work space (below, left)
3. Morning kitchen (below, right)

We’ve successfully developed these in single family plans for years, so I know how impactful they will be for renters. These three spaces alone have the power to set any new multifamily community well apart from the competition. The photos I’ve included in this post are examples of Thoughtful Home spaces in single family homes, and I’m confident that replicating the design and feel of these areas in new apartments will make a dramatic impact.

In three upcoming posts, I’ll explain the science and reasoning behind my goal of incorporating each of these three spaces into new apartment designs. I’ll also show unit plans that include working examples of each space so you can see how they can impact residents. Stay tuned!
